Judges Critique
Midland Shar Pei Club Open Show
Date: 14th July 2007
Venue: Sports Connexion, Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Coventry
Judge:
Mr. Matgo Law

My sincere thanks to the Committee of the Midland Shar Pei Club for the invitation to judge their Open Show 14 July 2007. It has been 12 years since my last close examination of the Shar Pei in UK. I am happy to see the tremendous improvement in type and qualities. Many exhibits have very good harsh coat texture which I regard as an important feature of the breed. I also found the bitches have generally higher qualities than dogs. Quality bitches are so important to a breeder and success of a kennel prefix.

The Secretary told me that the entry is good and I thank you for the enthusiasm and support from the exhibitors. I have totally enjoyed the Show and my stay in UK. It is so nice to see the old friends again and meet new ones. Many thanks again to my UK Shar Pei friends making my trip in your country a very pleasant one

VETERAN DOG
1st  BUTTERFIELD'S CH. FORGEVALLEY PAUSE AND POSE FOR CHEQUERPEI ShCM: Square built dog, good head with flat skull and nice set ears, black mask; head type even better with a little less muzzle padding and wrinkles; typical ring tail, a very good mover and excellent condition in 8 years’ of age.
2nd MEDHURST & GRAY'S SAMSARA YEAH-BABY: Heavy boned square dog with large head and rather thick neck; a little under-coat; 7-1/2 years’ old and in excellent condition.

MINOR PUPPY DOG
1st GRIMSHAW'S HEADHOLME EASY RIDER: Square built 7 months’ puppy with very good head type and flat skull, well muscled with right loose skin and wrinkles also good gait at this young age. Ears set a little low and hopeful could be improved with his maturity. BEST PUPPY DOG
2nd DILKES IMZADI FUNKY FRIDAY: Large headed puppy at 7months’ old, could move better with age and improved handling; would like darker colour of the eyes.

PUPPY DOG
1st BUTTERFIELD'S  CHEQUERPEI SECRET CODE: A dilute coloured dog (Chinese termed as “Five-Points-Red”), naturally with lighter eyes; well square built and very nice head, small ears set on top of flat skull, muzzle length and skull correctly proportioned, firm top time, very good in coat length and texture. The head could be better expressed with deeper setting of eyes RESERVE BEST DOG.
2nd HOWARD'S DRAKKARS SPEED OF SOUND: Red dog of good type and strong black pigment; low set tail and not in a mood to show himself; coat is not off-standing; could actually move better than the winner of the class.

JUNIOR DOG
1st Austin’s Gizyjo Goodlad. (as Puppy Dog)
2nd Wade’s Chequerpei The Sorcorer. Fawn with dark muzzle. Good head, eyes and pigment, well proportioned body, high tail set, moved well.
3rd Balmer and Foster’s Pullupaa Jumpin Jack Flash. Red brush coat, well built, good shape and size, moved well.

NOVICE DOG
1st MacLEAN'S MOSHULONG DIMOND GEZA: Very good harsh texture, short coat, very small ears are a little low set, strong black pigment, good moving dog both coming and going; wish to have the head piece to be larger in proportion with the body size and an improved show temperament.

POST GRADUATE DOG
1st WISBEY'S QINROSE JEDI KNIGHT: Good sized and boned red dog; a very good head with dark eyes, coat texture harsh and off-standing, good front and both coming action and side gait are good; looking for more drive of the hind action and a little shorter tail.
2nd MacLEAN'S MOSHULONG ANGELIC DIABLO: Red dog with a nice head, good ears and the muzzle and skull are in correct proportion; good coat and high set strong short tail; head piece is small to size of body for a male.

LIMIT DOG
1st MEDHURST & GRAY'S WELSHLO TRIPLE-X-SAMSARA: Very good headed dog with correct proportion between the muzzle and the skull, the appropriate amount of wrinkles, small ears placed on the top of skull and tight to skull. Strong back and short high set tail. Wish for more powerful hind action to make the picture perfect but that did not bar him to become the BEST DOG and RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.
2nd RUPNIAK'S KONISHIKI LORD NELSON J.W.: Strong square built dog, very good body proportion; good harsh texture of coat, small and correct setting of ears, strong black pigment, overall good head but looked for smaller width of the muzzle in the proportion of skull. Very good mover. A very close second place in this class.

OPEN DOG
1st HOWARD'S CH. DARKKARS CALVIN KLEIN: Excellent moving strong black dog, good movement tells the dog has correct bone structure, head is typical with correct proportion of the muzzle and skull, good black pigment and deep eye colour; eyes could be a little too open and I wish to see a better texture of the coat.
2nd WEBB'S CHIFIDO ALL FLASH NO CASH: Stocky red colour dog with a sizable head piece, low built image but move well. Ears should set higher on the skull.

VETERAN BITCH
1st WISBEY'S QINROSE CALL ME MADAM: Low but square built bitch at her 7 years of age. Very nice head in black mask, dark eyes well set with correct frowning expression, small ears set on top of the skull, very good harsh coat texture, excellent condition at her age. She gaits freely with power and drive. BEST VETERAN IN SHOW.
2nd WISBEY'S STARFERRY SCARLET RIBBONS FOR QINROSE: A very well maintained bitch at an good age of almost 10. A head with small ears set nicely on the top of the skull, light coloured nose, neck sets well on shoulders, another bitch with very good coat texture. Eyes are open, and size of head is a little small for the body.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH
1st MORRIS' TIANSHAN PASSION FLOWER AT ASHOWAI: 7 months’ old nice puppy with typical head, muzzle and skull are in correct proportion, good length of neck sets well on shoulders; could be a little high on legs but she moves well at this young age.
2nd PARISH'S CWMBARRI’S RHEA OF SATURN RHODESIANSIS: 7-1/2 months’ old low and square bitch puppy, very nice ears set on a flat skull, muzzle is a little short and very short neck.

PUPPY BITCH
1st BAYLISS' TIANSHAN FLOWER POWER: Nice square built little bitch puppy, good ears set on a flat skull, adequate stop and good length of muzzle, black mask, a firm body and structure at this young age, very promising puppy for future show career. A better mover, coming and going, of the two in this class. BEST PUPPY BITCH and BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.
2nd BUTTERFIELD & BRADLEY'S JOLEROB LOVIN ANGELS AS WELL AS CHEQUERPEI: Square built bitch puppy, have a good flat skull at this young age, ears set a bit low, good harsh coat texture.

JUNIOR BITCH
1st BROWN'S MIJUJO COAL FIRE: A bitch with nice head, good length of muzzle in good proportion to skull, small ears placed correctly, strong back and best mover of the 3 in same class.
2nd ROWLANDS' DRAKKARS SAFE AND SOUND: Big size square built bitch with good muzzle and face, an overall nice bitch, a lesser mover than the winner of same class.

NOVICE BITCH
1st HODGKINSON'S QINROSE RED VELVET FOR BULLPEI: Lovely bright red bitch of quality, good head with small ears placed correctly on top of skull, lovely face with expression. Head piece and body size are in good proportion, high set tail, moved very nicely. I wished for more harsh coat texture.
2nd ROWLANDS' CHADSON ONE MORE TIME: Nice head piece, length of muzzle and skull in good proportion, small and well set ears, neck set well on shoulders; a little high on legs.
An overall strong class of very nice bitches.

POST GRADUATE BITCH
1st HOWARD'S DRAKKARS TEARS FOR FEARS: Black square built bitch, nice feminine head and adequate length of neck, good mover; the black coat is shaded with a lighter silvery-black colour which happens to black colour Shar Pei and is acceptable.

LIMIT BITCH
1st WILSON'S PULLUPAA READY TO RUN: Square built bitch with very good head; correct proportion body and neat bone structure which give her excellent movement especially the drive of the hindquarter, high, strong and tight tail set and carriage. She edged out the second place by her better movement, tail set and good showmanship. RESERVE BEST BITCH.
2nd BAYLISS' TIANSHAN SHINING DAWN: Bitch of very good head type and square built body, also a very good mover. Her coat is the shortest type that a Shar Pei could wear (not necessary the best texture, but is rare nowadays). A typical specimen of the breed.

OPEN BITCH 4 entries 2 absent
1st BUTTERFIELD'S GIZYJO GIGGLE N GOSSIP WITH CHEQUERPEI: A fawn bitch with a very good head, all features are in their right shapes and places, adequate but not excess, feminine. Good front and body with substance, a very good mover, coming and going. The very outstanding features of her is her excellent harsh coat texture and her extremely high set and short tail which is so strong and pulled tight. An outstanding bitch that I love to take home. She was my star of the day. BEST BITCH and BEST IN SHOW.
2nd  WEBB'S CHIFIDO WINTER COLLECTION: Another very nice square built bitch with typical head features, ears are small and set tight on the top of skull, good front and strong hindquarter and moved well with drive. The coat seemed to be under a moulting stage however good texture was shown. High set tail with ring shape carriage.
