Judges Critique

I would like to thank the committee of the Midland Shar Pei club for inviting me to judge their limit show, I was honoured to be given the opportunity to assess so many quality dogs and bitches. I’d also like to say thanks to my very able steward. As always there was a lovely friendly atmosphere and I would like to thank all exhibitors for the sporting and supportive way they accepted my placings.

VETERAN DOG
What a great class to start the day with! How lovely it was to see such great examples of the breed still strutting their stuff in the ring at 11 plus years, they are a credit to their breeders
1. Wisbey's Qinrose Jimmy Choo
An impressive male of size and proportion, strong front and good square head, deep powerful masculine chest straight front and tight feet, coat was short and harsh to the touch, a well balanced dog that moved well for his age  BVIS
2. Bull and Warren's Starferry Shanghai Style. Another male of substance, well proportioned head, good pigment stood square, harsh cream brush coat , correct top line but was dropping his tail today however he seemed to enjoy his time in the ring.

JUNIOR DOG
1. Grimshaw's Sharpuggles Spanish Rider
A lot to like about this young lad, lovely example shown in top condition. Fantastic masculine head, great bite and pigment, broad well padded muzzle clear dark eyes thick well placed ears, strong neck leading to a straight front, with a good depth of chest for his age, correct Dip and rise with a good tailset and carriage. Loved his rear movement but would like to see him tighten up more on his front, still to fully mature but pleased to award him BD.

POST GRAD DOG
1. Poole’s Coatakinti Double Dare
Another lovely young male. Super head and muzzle proportions, bite correct but would have preferred more pigment. Nice clear eyes, broad skull but for me I’d prefer to see a smaller ear. Strong neck onto excellent shoulder placement, good depth of chest and brisket. Well muscled straight front , plenty of bone and tight feet, correct top line and rear angulation which showed well on the move, overall a very well balanced young man close contender for bd just didn’t settle enough today unfortunately but for sure one to watch out for RBD

OPEN DOG

1. Poole’s Coatakinti Double Trubble
Male of good size and proportions, gorgeous head , very masculine in expression, well placed ears strong neck onto a deep well muscled chest , harshest of coats correct top line great tailset moved out well but another male who sadly just didn’t show to his full potential today..

VETERAN BITCH
1. Wisbey’s Qinrose Chantilly Lace
Great to see this little lady making an appearance today, almost 12 years of age and still putting on a show! Smaller red brush coat bitch stood square on tight feet and a nice harsh coat. Moved well for her age.

PUPPY BITCH
1. Grimshaw’s Hafferlaffen Moonlight Shaddow at Sharpuggles
Very eye catching feminine young red bitch, square well proportioned head, correct bite and pigment lovely clear eye and well placed ears, good length of neck onto a straight front and tight feet top line is great as is tailset and carriage , rear angulation correct and moved out well
Happy to award BPIS

JUNIOR BITCH
1. Stephenson and Rees’ Loupei’s Coco Chanel
Lovely compact bitch fantastic dentition and the blackest of pigment, clear dark almond eye and thick well placed ears on a broad skull. Well proportioned head full of character and expression. Strong neck onto a well laid shoulder excellent front correct Dip and rise with a well set tail. Move soundly and effortlessly around the ring.
2. Grimshaw’s Sharpuggles Spanish Lady
Nice bitch for size and balance, good bite and pigment broad flat skull well placed ears would prefer more defined stop and more reach of neck. Strong forechest straight front and tight feet, top line and depth of chest good as is tailset and tight coin tail , moved well slightly loose in front but she’s still young enough to tighten up.

POST GRADUATE BITCH
This was a very close class with two very similar bitches with very similar outlines and attributes - in the end it came down to the texture of my winners coat which was short and harsh to the touch however both had lots to offer and time on their side.
1. Dawson’s Quinhalo Rich Bich
Nice clean bitch with a good outline, strong front and pleasing head, pleasing mouth with correct bite and pigment. moved steadily and with purpose, held her top line well on the move and made a pretty picture in profile. RBB
2. Lloyd’s Sharpuggles Talk About Luck
Another clean bitch who was a pleasure to go over great temperment she never stopped wagging her tail , of sound construction and she covered the ground with ease. Expressive head with a good clear dark eye with a mouth to match, correct scissor bite. I would like to see how this girl matures as she has a lot of raw potential lost out on coat texture but pushed hard for first place.

OPEN BITCH
1. Elmer’s Carennydd Within Temptation Avec Peipals
Lovely dark red fawn brushcoat who caught my eye as soon as she walked in the ring, lovely head proportions with just the right amount of work. Good shoulder lay and straight front which she used to her full advantage on the move, correct dip and rise with a good high tail set and moderate rear angulation. She moved well all ways and formed a beautiful silhouette when stood. I was informed later that she had already won BOB at a local open show that day and I wasn’t surprised she couldn’t be ignored and I was pleased to award her BIS.
2. Bull & Warren’s Starferry Beyond Belief ShCM
Red fawn 5 year old girl, good proportions throughout and a lovely dark almond eye - expressive head workings and good bite and pigment, moved well but didn’t have the ‘look at me’ attitude of 1.

Ann Lomas Memorial Special Stakes
Wow what a class, I was so privileged to have such a collection of quality dogs in this class and any of them could take top honours on another day. I found my winner in -
1.Stephenson & Rees’ Loupei’s Going The Distance, and I’m quite sure this girl will do that in the not to distant future. A sound bitch with so many quality features, good head proportions, great bite and pigment, good strong length of neck leading to a lovely lay of shoulder and the straightest of fronts, she had the required dip and rise on her top line which she held well on the move. She powered round the ring which showed off her excellent movement both fore and aft.
2. Dawson’s Loupei’s Paco Rabanne at Quinhalo
Another from the same kennel with many of the same attributes, although smaller in stature this boy was giving nothing away and showed to perfection for his owner with a beautiful headpiece and the darkest of eyes with pigment to match. Good bite, lovely short harsh coat. Required dip and rise which he held on the move . Lovely rear action, lost out today as he was a bit looser on the front than 1 but given his age he has time on his side
